1962 remington 700 scope mounting

I recently purchased a 1962 model 700 270 that has a new scope mounted in some funky rings i dont like, plus there a little too high, so i thought no biggie, i will just get some more, but from what i gather these early 700s say pre 1972ish rear receiver area is 117 thousandths lower than front,newer 700s are 100 thousanths lower, does anyone know of vintage base/ rings or am i stuck with shimming the rear to get that 17 thousandth back? Ive heard of doing so with coke can etc but it seems like i need to do this to keep unnecessary torque off the scope tube and sometimes its hard to get zeroed, ive also heard of people using modern rings with no issue at all. Thoughts? Also id prefer a simple ring that screws directly to the receiver and avoid having more weight/ parts than necessary. Thoughts? Thanks

I have the Leupold's in two piece on mine.

Last one I had to shim I used 20 thou shim stock under a 1 piece DNZ mount. Checked alignment after I torqued it down with a lapping bar and it was dead on. If you measure 3 different receivers, all 3 will be different. I've never been a fan of dovetail or twist in ring setups, but that's just a personal preference.

Give Leupold a call, they will tell which base model you will need. I getting ready to put Leupold base on my early 80s 700.
But you may want to call them to make sure the base is specific to your older remmie.
