Any 1903 collectors/shooters here? I am looking for one to shoot in battle rifle matches. Arsenal not important but high serial number is.

I found a Rock Island near me but the ser # is a bit low and it has a straight bolt handle. The owner says he has fired it with no issues. I'll be quizzing him re load data if I go look at it.

Google, 1903, receivers, heat treatment, serial numbers, etc.
Serial numbers, arsenal and bolt handle angle are keys to making purchase decision.

My father bought home a Japanese ariska (sp?) From ww 2. My sister's ex got hold of it and that was the last we saw of it. Him too.

Thanks, I use to have one that I inherited from a family members collection. Should be an interesting read. I heard something later on the receiver thing. I did shoot it a few times. It had a peep sight which was pretty cool. Glad it didn't blow up on me. Must not have had one of the bad ones.

Double heat treatment started on those earlier than Springfields..
Never seen a straight bolt handle on a Springfield.

I have a Springfield M-1903, it's the only thing I have from my Dad.

It's a 1.45M serial number from SA, so well out of the range of the ~ 800K problem childs. More on this here: http://m1903.com/03rcvrfail/

Short version: "On December 2, 1927 a board was convened by the U.S. Army to look into the problem, and determine how to identify the brittle receivers and determine if they could be strengthen by re-heat treatment. The board made the determination of where the problem had occurred in receivers, and its from their deliberations that we use the 800,000 serial number for Springfields, and 286,506 for Rock Island receivers. They also concluded it was not feasible to re-heat the "low numbered receivers", and that they should be withdrawn from service. "
