What are they really good for. I know of one I could probably buy worth the money. It would just be a for the heck of it buy. I can tell by the price of ammo it won't be a plinking gun.

My BIL in California is having success with it on ground squirrels and coyotes. I guess the surprise is he is claiming lot of shots over 100 yards.
 
Is it a 17 HMR, WSM, or a 17 caliber centerfire? The HMR is a fun gun to shoot squirrels and crows with. Its a little over kill on anything you want to eat unless you head shoot it but it sure is fun to watch fur/feathers fly at 100-150yds. The WSM is faster and flatter shooting than the HMR and you can get heavier bullets for critters up to coyote size. The centerfire 17's are still too small in my opinion for anything bigger than coyotes but the bullet will get there QUICK!
 
17 HMR. Ground hogs @ 120yrds. You tube videos of hog hunting. IMO its too small for hogs. My Savage is picky on what it shoots. Hornady VMax holds 0.5" @ 100yrds. Others blow out to 1".

I have had a couple HMR's and the most accurate was a wood stock Marlin. On a still day you could hit a dime at 100yds about every shot. I sold it to fund another gun but wish I had it back.
 
I had a savage HMR and it was probably the most accurate gun i have had. Bought it for $187 new at walmart. Now i see them for $300+.
 
They are dandy for squirrel as long as its a head shot. No problem with coyote out to 200 Headset will drop them. In the neck,they want go far.

I have a Remington 700 Varmint in 17 Remington that I wish I'd never bought. It's finicky to load for and the tiny bullets are hard to handle. Even cleaning is a chore as the cleaning rod is like pushing a wet noodle up the bore because it flexes so much. I love all the 22 centerfires so that's what got me into buying the 17. I've thought about getting it barreled to 223 Ackley Improved someday as that would be the best fit to the bolt face and make it much more what I think of as a varmint rifle.
