My neighbor just bought a (Savage?) 17 bolt action that takes Ruger 10/22 mags. 17 is one of the few calibers I've never shot before. The gun is SUPER cool, and from what I can tell, they tapered down a 22 WMR to 17 cal. He picked it up super cheap, and asked me to inspect it. I did, and it looks mechanically flawless. As a firearm, it's just fine. But the price made me suspicious (it was around $200)

Just wanted to see what you all thought. Other than a varmint or plinking gun, I don't see much else use to it. Then again, I know nothing about it.

He's moving to Savannah later this year and wants to do some hunting, so he's building his collection now. Dont know if this rifle will add value though.

Oh yeah, have the Savage 93R17 with the laminated thumbhole stock, a matching set for my daughter and myself, with SS polished bbls. They are nice and really fun to shoot. I used to have a gumball that my daughter shot at 100 yards with hers. Good times. 😊

They are excellent and punch way above their weight. I use the 20 gr XTPs for groundhog and they anchor them right there. Find the right ammo and it'll put a smile on your face.

The xtp are all i use in mine, and have done a fantastic job on everything ive shot with it.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! Alright, my concerns are abated. Guess my friend just got a hell of a good deal!

Annnnd now I want a 17HMR revolver.

Dude - welcome to the south. Almost everyone I know has a .17. Mines a savage. I got it because my .22 ricocheted off an armadillo and pissed me off. Since then, the .22 has worked fine on them. But the .17, you can kill any animal in North America if you hit it in the right spot. It is deadly and accurate. Mine touches bullet holes at 100 yards. I currently have a thermal sitting on it.

I have a CZ455 in 17HMR. I've killed coyotes, groundhogs, etc. It really shines in late season for killing squirrels at 75-100yds out. Absolute laser. Suggest head shots only...
Agreed head shot only

Me. I don't. 😥 They're not that popular up here and very expensive.

Stupid ass yankee blue state.

I sold a Savage 93 to a gentleman in Nashville years ago, would like to buy it back. It was stainless, heavy barrel, laminated stock, stupid accurate. I had the barrel threaded. It would do 10 shots in a dime at 100 yards. I told the buyer that, heard from him the next week that I wasn't lying! Most accurate rifle I have ever owned

I bought one when they first came out and it was a Savage. I really had fun plinking with it but at the time, the only shells I had for it were the Hornady red tip things. I was NOT impressed with performance on small game. If you hit bone (like the others are saying for squirrels...head shots) the damage was crazy. If you shot something like a groundhog, most of the time they would run off and get back to their hole or under something if you didn't head shoot them or hit some heavy bone. I sold the Savage and everybody kept telling me I needed to try shooting one with different bullets than the Hornadys. So I ended up getting a CZ and bought every different kind of bullet I could find. I still wasn't overly impressed with it for anything other than plinking. I by far favored the .22 Mag...mostly because I could get heavier bullets, and didn't have to reply on solid bone impacts to stop something in its tracks.

i have a .17mach2 savage in the box if anyone interested i have 2 other of the mach2s so this one needs to go just send a pm for more info btw they are tack drivers
