head shots or straight in ribs,it will gut them & tear up meat ,they are very accurate & head shots are very doable way past normal 22 range,i found that i lost to many by shooting so far if i shot more than 2,all them tree's get to looking alike when you start moving around trying to pick them up :( ,i dont use mine often but am glad i have it ,mike243

It is a good round. If i where in the market for a new gun i would go with the .22 mag. You have more choice of bullet weight from 30 grain v-max to a 50 grain hp. But i have to agree the .17 is a little better shooter, only thing is you can't really shoot through brush with it , but the .22 mag will a little better.

I love hunting squirrels with my 17. There super accurate and great range. They will gut them for sure..

I love my marlin..Regular Tack driver..I switched to the XTP 20gr bullet,it has controled expansion for bigger game like coyotes..I shot a Coyote with it last year at 100 yds,front shot in the chest, put him down in about 30 yds..Not bad for a 20gr pill..Won't ever get rid of her!

What? If your going to shoot bigger animals like yotes,fox,and bobcat,i'd use the 20gr XTP,control expansion for deep penetration and doesn't fragment..

Yeah if your going to shoot anything bigger would almost have to be a head shot, but that will take them down for sure!

My other CZ 453 Varmint. Too hard on squirrels, but is perfect for groundhogs, scary accurate.

I will say, if you shoot a squirrel with one you BETTER head shoot it, or there will be nothing left.

Seen one shot in the head, fell dead. BUT thats probably the only place you could shoot one

For squirrels, you have to shoot them in the head. They will kill coyotes with head shot(drop), neck(drop or easy to track)and I have killed 3 that were hit behind the shoulder and fell within site. All with the 17 grain Hornady. Haven't lost one yet. Farthest shot 150 yards.

I'm not trying to hijack, but what is the comparible ballistics between the .17 and the 22 mag. Everyone talked me into getting the 22 mag last year. Don't have a problem with it.

The 22mag is slower than the 17hmr but has more energy..The 17hmr is way more accurate and alot faster,which in turn gives you a flatter trajectory at longer ranges..On if it will kill a yote,my uncle shot one iwth mine up in KY on his farm at 175 yds,put it right in the front chest,20gr XTP bullet did its job,about a 20 yd tracking job..

ditto, my farthest is 110, fell dead. Same ammo as mentioned above, love it.

I have a Savage model 93 in .17HMR that I bought to chase coyotes on corp land where centerfires aren't allowed. I have yet to actually go out and try it out but shooting from a bench it is very accurate. I had some squirrels chew through one of the vents on my roof so I started picking them off when they got near the house. As already mentioned it will put one heck of a hole through them using the Horandy 17-grain V-Max bullet which was fine with me.

As others have said: very accurate (out to 200 yds, but wind really blows these little bullets around), fun to shoot, quiet and cheap compared to a centerfire. Lots of opinion on hunting with them all over the internet. Most say no: tears up small game, too light/poor bullet design for larger game. (Some bullets are better than others if you're going to hunt coyotes with these, but there is a very real possibility that the bullet will explode just under the hide without killing the yote. I have not experienced this myself, since I hunt yotes entirely with a .223 or a 12ga.)

IMO, if you're going to hunt with a rimfire that is heavier than .22LR, you should go with a .22mag.

I have an Anschutz 1717D w/ a Leupold target scope on it. If you have room, set some little balloons from 75 out to about 250 yds, and shoot at those. Really teaches you the effect of range and wind.

Chances are you wouldnt have found him with a 17 either, it really needs to be a head shot with either caliber. jmo

I love my savage lefty 17. It is a tack driver but if you want to have anything left of a squirell you better shoot the head. I did have to change the way I carried my squirrels though. For years I used one of those wire loop things duck hunters use. You put the head in and it hold them for you. With the 17, there wasnt enough head left to hold it.

Overall it is one of my favorite guns to play with. I haven't shot coyotes, but I have a few crow kills at about 250 yards with it
