What could i plant right now for a food plot ( except for winter rye & winter wheat) that would germinate and grow quickly with the predicted weather we have coming? Turnips? clover? etc?
 
Very little. We are close to the end (if not there) of good early growth weather (warm enough soil temps).
 
do you think winter wheat aand winter rye will come up considering we had good soil moisture and a couple of rains? We planted it a few days ago.
 
Yes, cereal grains will germinate, but growth will be slow. It may be gun opener before it is up high enough for deer to start using it.

Now if we get a warm spell, growth will explode.
 
we used to plant rye grass right after we picked cotton, and it wouldnt grow just real fast, but when it sprouts up they will wear it out...no doubt about that!!!

DON'T use ryegrass in food plots! Once you have it, you will never get rid of it. Plus, it's not a nutritious food for deer.

Everything. Ryegrass is a grass. Deer cannot digest grasses. Ryegrass is only nutritious/digestible when it first sprouts and starts growing (the ends of the blades). It is used so much in Deep South food plots because it will grow in any soil and over-populated, starving deer will eat just about anything.

Winter rye or grazing rye is a cereal grain. Cereal grains don't have the high lignen content of grasses hence can be digested easier. Winter rye produces a seed head in spring just like wheat or oats. It's what rye bread is made from.
 
I'm planting a little more this evening. We are going to have good rain for the next 18-24 hours. It is going to get a little cool over the weekend (low 30s over night), but next week it is suppose to be in the 70 everyday, with lows in the mid 40s. Should be real nice.

we never did actually plant it for the deer, we used it to do haylege for the cows on the farm, the deer tore it up thats why i suggested it
 
I'm amazed at how fast my plots have grown. They were just popping out of the ground Saturday, and now, just 4 days later, they are fully 4 inches tall.
