My buddy shot this one Sunday morning but only got 1 lung...he got a tracking dog and jumped him up...He found it yesterday with the help of buzzards!

Good for him, phenomenal buck. How does tagging a deer work when you find it "out of season", so to speak. Wondering if he burns a tag or treats it as a dead head find? How does the State look at it? Never been in that situation so honestly have no clue.

Carcass looks intact from this pic. How far from the shot did he go with one lung hit?

The state would look at it as requiring a tag to possess. There have been cases made for being in possession of freshly killed antlers. It prevents "head hunters" who don't care about the meat from shooting multiple bucks, letting them run off, and then taking the rack.

Since it will not look "right" in the system, a call to the local officer or regional office to explain the situation would likely be a good idea.

I would agree the right thing to do is tag it. Because we have paper tags we should be able to go after the fact. but a call may stop some funny questions from our friends in green :)

He burned a tag but well worth it! He only shoots deer that are 5 years old or old...So when he shoots its usually big.

Glad he was able to find it. Wonder what type of broad head and distance the buck ran.
