Met up with Fleet Fox this afternoon, to find a spot to hunt in the morning in hopes of seeing a glimpse of the wide 10pt that I passed last year. FF has seen the deer this year and has an idea where he is running. While in the woods we also wanted to shoot a doe or two for summer sausage.

So as the light was fading, we had some deer feeding toward us in a field. Two spikes came off the hill but then turned and went into the woods. A doe ran off into the woods only 30 yards in front of us, and after a few minutes we had what looked like 2 does and a fawn feeding back into view.

Knowing there had been a couple of spikes nearby I wanted to be sure. My Tasco scope isn't that great in low light, but I could see the deer silhouetted against the field and couldn't see any sign of antler. Fleet Fox had a much better scope, dialed all the way in and focused. He couldn't see antler either, so I shot the deer at about 50 yards or so.

Went and got the truck and took up blood. The deer didn't run 20 or 30 yards, perfect heart shot.

As I walked up to the deer, I saw it was one of the spikes...so I am tagged out now. Tough checking that one in.

Good job Catman. These days that kind of integrity is to be congratulated. Aldo Leupold once stated that a man's integrity is the most tested when he sees a single file row of quail marching down a corn row and could easily make a skillet shot. Out in the field, nobody to tell on you but God. Congrats on a good season.

Why don't you invest in a good pair of vortex Binoculars 10 x 42 or something.. i never hunt without a good pair of binoculars in my bag...Vortex makes great binoculars...

Fleet fox was looking at the deer thru a 10x Vortex scope... I guess I need to let em walk if it starts getting close to the end of shooting light
 
Scope and Binoculars are 2 different items...Binoculars are a lot better to look thru...just saying...i think if you ask people on this forum, a lot of them carry optics....congrats on your deer... really like your video's ....

thanks, I am sure I would benefit from a good pair of binocs, but the good ones are bulky and not cheap and I like to pack as light as possible... Normally my camcorder 50x zoom is great for IDing game from a distance, but it was getting a little too dark for the camera, so we were using the scopes, and both made a mistake in IDing that deer. Just glad I had a tag left

I did the same thing last week Catman, shot a spike thinking it was a doe. It also burnt my 2nd buck tag. But I have had an awesome season and have no regrets. I still have 1 doe tag left in unit A "my home" but I am in no hurry to fill it.
 
And those antlers are just soooo easy to see, say some. And this was out in a field no less. Congrats cm on a fine buck, nothing wrong with that.
 
been there done that

i hunted a qdm place in henry county my job was simple shoot every doe walking

one night last light 300 yds 2 does came out and i shot the bigger one

it was a spike ... I assume the other was a doe hardest phone call i ever made ... my issue wasnt checking it in but telling the land owner what i did
i didnt have to tell him no one would know
his response was the best ever

there are casualties in war

Props to you Catman for being a big man to check the deer in legally and publicly admit that you made a mistake. We need more hunters like you in the field. Much respect from me.

BTW, why is your username Catman? Do you have a lot of housecats? :)

lol no I made that username when I joined a catfishing forum at age 12, I still love fishing for whisker kitties when I'm not hunting.

DA, that's great and he had a good attitude about it. Even the PI doe hunt allows you to kill a spike buck. I hate I can't chase another good one especially the potential 4 year old that I passed last year as a 120" 3 year old. But on the bright side I always love hunting the does and will maybe try some new spots and kill a couple more this year. I just hope and pray I don't see a good one on public land this year. I would love more than anything to kill a good buck on the WMA I have spent most of my days hunting on.

That's what I do... :poke: That being said, I watched what I thought was a doe for 45 minutes Friday afternoon and looked at it many times through the binocs. Finally figured out it was a unicorn, single spike on one side and it laid more back over its head. Low light and tall grass fields can make it tough.
 
Congrats! I don't carry binoculars either. With glasses, they have their own issues and I choose to leave them out of my gear.
 
A week ago I was about to shoot what I thought was a doe in some close sunlit brush but took a last look with the binoculars and sure enough the antlers showed up. A few weeks earlier in open woods in low light the same thing happened - couldn't see the antlers in a scope but they jumped out at me with the binoculars. The older I get the more I need good optics.

I have 20/15 vision and see very well in low light, but this was just one of those iffy situations with very small brown antlers that had no contrast against the background.

Great job, Catman. This is a good example of how this can and does happen to very attentive, disciplined hunters. The changes of the last two years will put a lot of well-intention hunters in the same situation.
