I was drawn on the LBL hunt yesterday and today. I got Area 13 and had decided to check out a spot I found on a topo map. I got there Thursday at about 10:45 am and got back tot he area I wanted to check and it looked good from a terrain/thickness standpoint. I didn't see any sign, but didn't care about that. I think I was the first one into that part of Area 13, but when i got back and set up camp, I decided to run into town for a couple of things and there were trucks everywhere. I decided that on Friday it was buck only and I was only hunting this morning then heading back. Well Friday I saw 8 does in the am and 1 doe in the PM. I liked the area I was hunting so I figured give it one more go this morning. I got in the stand before daylight. It was windy and I was skeptical, but hopeful. I had a doe come through at 7:05 and I was going to pop her and go home, but she literally disappeared right in front of me. I couldn't tell it then, but at the bottom of the hill there was a slight lip with brush on it and she slipped under it and out of my sight line and headed down the holler. I looked for about 2 minutes, because I thought she stopped behind a tree. I doe grunted, and waited but nothing, I buck grunted, and nothing. About 2 minutes later, I hear footsteps behind me and glanced over my left shoulder and saw antlers. I could tell the G2 and G3 were pretty tall. I had the mits over my fingers and I had to get my fingers exposed to shot. I only had two windows to shoot through and he was in the first. I got my fingers out and he was going into the second window. I glassed his head saw the G2 and G3 and decided to shoot. I haven't shot a buck in a while. As soon as I shot he started snow plowing the ground and I knew he was hit hard. He went around a corner and I heard him crash. I got down and just walked right to where I thought he went down and there he was. I hit him in the heart and he went 25-30 yds.
I then dragged him back to camp 3/4 of a mile... I found out i have muscles that I forgot I had. took me about 2 hrs from the time I found him till I got back to camp. They aged him at 3.5 yrs old. He was 10 pts, with a broken tip on the right main beam, broken tips to the right G2 and left G3. He also had a cut nose and stunk. He won;t score high, but I am happy yo have gotten him. He is my best public land deer to date.
