10/22 Slam fire?

I've been trying to break in my 10/22 carbine and yesterday it slam fired on me, luckily gun was pointing at the ground in a safe direction but it did startle me. I decided to shoot a few rounds this evening but before I racked the action I mentally prepared for a discharge and low and behold it done it again. I know this is an issue with 10/22s. I know someone who died a few years ago due to a slam fire. My question is where do I go from here? Should I contact Ruger or take it to a trusted gun smith? I'd like to have it fixed quickly. Suggestions?

Remove the bolt and clean the firing pin groove. Any good degreasing type spray solvent and a blast of compressed air will work. That groove will have shavings from the factory or other gunk in there that jams the firing forward in the firing position when it should slide back and forth freely for the short distance that it's supposed to travel.

You have had multiple slam fires. I would send it back to Ruger. Too much danger and liability involved.
That's my suggestion and what I would do. It's worth what you paid for it

Your hammer is overriding your sear when you rack it back. It should lock the hammer and sear regardless of your firing pin. Not to say that it doesn't need a cleaning. If you were closer to me, I could fix your problem. I got all kinds of parts for a 10/22 when everyone around here was building them, I lightened a lot of triggers, I bought a trigger jig for a 10/22 made it a lot easier. Did you buy the rifle new or used?

I know it's almost been a year but broke the action down and cleaned it well and fixed the issue.

Glad you got it taken care of.

Another reminder of how crucial gun safety and proper handling can be.
These firearms aren't supposed to, but technically almost any loaded gun could fire at any time on their own.

Had a 597 double fire. Wasn't sure if I heard it right and pulled the trigger again and it emptied the mag. Took it apart and the hammer came out in pieces

I just saw this older thread. Probably not relevant now that you have your issue fixed but maybe for others it could be. Several times I saw where people used Loctite on the screws when they installed the factory rail that came with the gun. They overdid the Loctite quite badly and drops went down and actually glued the firing pin. Not exactly the same issue because the pin wasn't stuck forward but back under return spring pressure and then the gun would not fire no matter what they did. So, yes, sticky firing pin can be several issues.

I didn't see the originally and am glad you posted this. Mine has never done this but I cannot tell you how many times I grabbed it and quickly racked it headed out to door to shoot something. I'd have hated to shoot a hole in my floor!
