……for a buck to be showing his ribs like this? Does he look sick or perhaps just the camera got him when he was inhaling, which made his ribs show?

He is showing a little rib, but alright.
He looks fine to me. Could be partly turned making his ribs a bit more visible than normal.

Pretty common this time of year that will start to change in about 6-8 weeks
Summer bod, trying to get a jump on the ladies for this fall.
