I've had a few hundred questions while you were on sabbatical, but since you're just easing back into posting, I'll keep it to one. I posted this last year but can't find the thread. I'd love to hear your thoughts on what was going on with this deer?

I had him on camera a lot last year. He showed up in mid-October. He was impressive but nothing seemed unusual about his body. I would get him on camera every week. Always middle of the night. I don't think I ever had a picture within 3 hours of daylight. The camera was over a well established salt lick and he loved it. Sometimes stood in it for 30 minutes to an hour and it was common for him to come to it multiple times in a night. You can only tell so much from still pictures, but he never seemed interested in anything resembling rut behavior. He seemed to ignore does and young bucks pestering does throughout November.

They are obviously supposed to gain weight going into the fall, but not like this. Fairly normal through November, but by December he looked like he'd been trough feed protein pellets all his life. He shed his antlers earlier than most and looked like a different species without them. I have a picture sequence of a button buck chasing him away from the salt lick after his antlers dropped, which just seemed weird.

I've never seen him again since January. I assume he's dead. But I've always wondered what would make an exceptional deer of seemingly normal health transform like this over the course 60 days.

Wow... Never seen anything like that! I will have to ask around and see if anyone else in the biz has either. But I'm assuming, especially due to early antler drop and lack of aggressiveness during the rut, that he had some sort of severe hormonal issue.

I don't have a ton of experience comparing deer testes, but in the 12/14 picture with him facing away, it seems like he has really small gnads. Which, I assume, could have something to do with the lack of aggressiveness/libido. But, if bucks typically bulk up in November due to a spike in testosterone, then it seems like he had testosterone in spades. Which seems inconsistent with a lack of aggressiveness or rutting behavior.

When I posted about him last year someone also pointed out that his tarsals never got dark.

I wish I'd killed him. I would really love to know how much he weighed right around Christmas.

Id would be awesome if you could fine his skull
Since I knew right about when he shed his antlers, and I knew where he spent a lot of his time, I asked TN Whitetail Freak to bring his shed dog down and hunt for his sheds. He combed the place over and found a few other sheds, but never this one. Most of the farm is river bottom and there were a couple backwaters around that time so he could have easily dropped them in a place they just weren't going to be found.

I shot a buck a month ago in MS that was full of fat. Most I've ever seen on a buck. Probably a 180 lb at 4.5 year old. His head was fat as well, with his eyes and nose sunk in somewhat with a shorter than normal nose. He was trailing a doe and limping. His tarsals were slightly black. Taxidermist also thought his fat face was odd.
