Snake Activity?

I'm likely hunting a different property tomorrow and there are rattlesnakes and copperheads typically in the area. With temps tomorrow morning in the low 40's will the snakes be likely to be less active? Also, do neoprene rubber boots offer enough protection from bites?

vipers usually only bite you if you step on them or extremely close to them. They do that in the 40s just as much as if it were in the 80s. They will have a tendency to seek thermal cover under rocks, fallen trees, etc overnight, so less likely to be in the wide open... until it warms up, then they will seek to sun themselves.

regular neoprene boots provide a little protection. Fangs penetrate through the rubber like a hot knife through butter, but the boots just give you a little more distance between the outside of the boot and your skin. Helps some with shorter fanged and younger snakes.

Neoprene rubber boots won't even come close to stopping a bite.

They'll be super sluggish on a cool morning but could still bite if stepped on

Why worry about it? There's probably almost no area in this state that is free of venomous snakes. I don't worry one iota about them, sure I wear snake gaiters but I'm not afraid.

I hunt super snakey mountains and wear the gaiters just to be smart. It's just a snake nothing to fear

You probably walk past at least 5x as many as you'll see. According to internet, Tennessee reports less than 100 snake bites a year. Most are copperheads. That includes people doing dumb stuff like catching venomous snakes or keeping them as pets.

I'm way more worried about ticks than I am venomous snakes. I just watch where I step and sit. You learned the best defense against snake bites in Kindergarten- keep your hands to yourself.

I'm way more worried about ticks than I am venomous snakes. I just watch where I step and sit. You learned the best defense against snake bites in Kindergarten- keep your hands to yourself.

Ticks are terrifying. The car rides to and from are dangerous.

Tennessee doesn't have snakes....FLORIDA has snakes. Afraid no. Respectful and cautious yes.

I never even give them a 2nd thought in TN, sure what your step in certain areas and look before you sit in certain terrain.

Alabama Im a bit more cautious about them but really just moccasins. TN Ive prob seen more crossing a dirt road then I have actually while hunting in 25 years.

I hope I grow up some day. I stepped on a rat snake about an hour ago mowing the yard. My heart is still racing. There is nothing more scary than the the squeamish feeling of a snake under foot!
Also if my short fat arse can cover that much distance in a short period of time everyone needs to rethink how close you would let someone get to you prior to shooting!

I've been bitten by a copperhead and I still never worry about snakes while hunting - ticks....now that's different story.

Funny enough... 50 years spent in the woods hunting/fishing/hiking, and the only time I've ever had a run in with a venomous snake that wasn't a water moccasin, I was on my motorcycle.

Was riding my CL350 at Paint Creek here in Greene County and out of the corner of my eye, I saw what I thought was a stick in the road take a strike at me as I rode by. Stopped and looked behind me and it was a little foot long copperhead crossing the road.

I'm more worried about Lyme disease or something from ticks.
When I see a rattle snake or cotton mouth I just admire it a few minutes then move on. I like them.

Snakes and I have surprised each other and twice. 1st time I was cleaning out gutters. I was reaching up over my head, standing on a ladder, grabbing handfuls of leaves when I grabbed something cool and kinda squishy. I bailed off the ladder and a 5 foot king snake went shooting out the end of the gutter.
2nd time, I was moving a section of a tree that I had used as a chopping block. It had started getting rotten and I was going to pick it up and put it on the burn pile. Chunks were coming off it as I was trying to lift it up in the trailer A good sized chunk had come off and had made a good place to grab. Stuck my hand in the hole and felt no shoulders all balled up. 'Twas a smallish rat snake, maybe 2 feet long.

HA yall can say what you want. I agree ticks and bugs can go to hell. But snakes, if it surprises me, I will scream like a little school girl on the playground. I hate them all. However, as I get older, I'm becoming more and more tolerant of them, especially the non-venomous ones. The venomous ones, no mercy. Sorry

IMO, still smart to were snake boots/leggings. Better safe than sorry.

Some of the places I push thru, I would be at least a little hesitant if not for those snake boots.

Snake boots did save me from a very nasty cottonmouth bite a few years ago. He was as big around as my arm, and the sucker hit me hard right above the ankle. But I was wearing snake boots. Only damage was to my underwear.

Snake boots hit the market after I had been hunting for almost 20 years. Always followed my dad's advice: watch where you put your hands and feet, watch where you sit down…you'll be fine.
