This is my first real season duck hunting. I went 4 times this past January but never fired a shot. It sure has been hot this season. Been going every chance I can get. Mostly Saturdays, sundays before church and sometimes Mondays for a little while before I take a nap before work. The first few weeks we were only seeing wood ducks and teal. My first duck was a wood duck hen. Couldn't have been more excited. After the first 2 openers we havent seen much though. Someone invited us to hop to a better blind at big sandy, I got my first mallard. (Big duck period). Shot a few since then but I havent personally shot more than 2 ducks every time we go. The last 3 out 4 times I have only shot once but got a duck every time. I really like the sport but man I see how people get discouraged fast.

I haven't tried to scout or find locations yet. I would love to have a walk in spot to go by myself to practice my calling but im not sure where to even start. I've heard you can walk in on certain wmas and not on others.

It can be rough sometimes. It has gotten to where the killing is a bonus, the main thing is the friendships made and the time spent together in a blind telling tales and eating. And sunrises are always a plus. Killing a few is nice, but the other is what is important.

Im waiting on the word to go with my preacher. I like the group of guys I am going with but this being my first season id like experience different ways. Id really like to try some flooded timber.

For practice are there areas that have ducks that you can call that are closed to hunting? I know I see more ducks after the season and early spring. That may be a time to practice.

I've got the camden and big sandy refuges near me. Is it aloud to practice calling there?

Camden Bottoms WMA has a walk in area. I've never hunted it, can't tell you anything about it, all I know is that it is on the maps. Just make sure you set up far enough from anyone else.

From the regs:

"Hunting will be permitted from permanent draw blinds and temporary blinds on Camden-Unit II, Big Sandy (including Gin Creek Unit), Barkley Unit II, Cordell Hull, Reelfoot, Tigrett, and West Sandy in accordance with statewide rules and regulations. Any temporary blinds and decoys must be at least two hundred (200) yards from any Tier 1, 2, or 4 waterfowl hunt locations blind and must be removed from the area at the end of shooting each day."

I've seen that and then someone told me you cant walk in at big sandy. So im not sure what to believe.
 
Some group of idiots down here in Mississippi must have had more money than brains, shot and killed over 200 geese and then realized the work was more than they wanted AND forgot to think about the law for killing that many migratory birds, THEN threw them in a dumpster, while an off duty cop videoed the whole thing.
My brother duck hunts , to me it seems to be as much if not more expensive than deer hunting!

I think it depends on a lease or public land. But its more expensive for shells, decoys and calls. Also all the food you eat but its some of the best hunting I've done.
