Stock refinishing,,, updated again. Lol

Bought this Rem Model Seven for my wife in Sept 1989. It's a 6mm Rem. It's been hunted with a lot and shot a lot and had the usual little bumps and bruises but over the last 4-5 years the finish started just peeling off.
I found a guy that said he could fix it up so I took it to him a couple months ago and he said it would be around the first of the year before he got to it. Well he text yesterday and said he had the old finish removed and the stock smoothed out and wants to know if this natural color was ok or if I wanted it stained.
I told him that looks good to me and just put a finish on it.
Will get more pics when he gets it done.

I use tung oil , it takes longer but after allowing it to dry after multiple coats, I use 2000 grit sand paper and buff it till it's a mirror finish.
Some finishes look thick and not smooth but that sand paper buff makes it worth the wait.
Don't forget to put your butt plate or kick pad back on or it will not fit well afterwards.

That's why I hired somebody to do it. Hopefully everything will fit back right.
And I wanted a gloss finish like the old BDLs had.

Me too , he recut the checkering while he was at it. I think it looks pretty dang slick. Pretty good looking piece of walnut for a factory rifle. Can't wait see it in person

That looks awesome! One of my old Mdl 7's that I inherited from my Dad is in need of some love as well. What did he use for a finish? Looks like Poly which I think was the original finish.

Tru-oil can create a finish exactly like this, trick is to spray the last couple of coats by thinning it with some mineral spirits and using a little detail spray gun. I have done may stocks this way. Attached is a photo of a Ruger #1 that I refinished for a friend. I need to add the ability to recut checkering into my repertoire, I am keeping my eye out for some checkering tools.

I was watching a video of a custom gun being built and the factory used Tru-oil for the stock finish. I don't recall how many coats they used for the dull finish but for the high gloss finish, they used 80 coats hand rubbed!

I've done several of my own rifles with Tru-Oil. It's not hard, just takes a lot of time. ~20 coats with fine steel wool in between.
