Food Plots UTV Spreader

My old Herd spreader bit the dust last fall so in market for another quality spreader. The Herd has been great for past 20 years and have replaced parts on it twice but it's toast now. Have two big spreaders for tractor so this will be used strictly for seed. Considering the one below and wonder if anyone has experience with the Spin Tech line? Looks like a quality product and made in Texas.

My 2nd Herd spreader is also dying. I've loved them. However, the latest Herd has increased dramatically in price, from around $350 to $1,200 (although the latest one is the bomb for UTVs!). Not sure I like the seed volume adjustment on that Spintech.

I DO really like the remote control on the SpinTech as well as the automatic seed shutoff when the motor is turned off. That would be a huge advantage over the Herd. But another concern is the 8-18' spread radius. Dang, my Herd throws it twice that far. of course, in small, narrow plots, that could be an advantage - not wasting seed being thrown out into the woods!

They have a galvanized model as well & a 150# one that is being discontinued. Afraid that 150# would be too heaving traveling on our rough arse roads. One thing I do like is that parts are available from TX. Probably going to bite the bullet on the poly one

That's how I damaged my current Herd. I made the mistake of traveling from cabin to food plot with the hopper completely full. Bent some components and now my agitator no longer works. Spreader still runs (spins) but no agitator.

Haven't had an agitator in mine for 3-4 years. My can & base finally fell apart. I'll gladly give you mine & maybe you can make one out of the two. Mines the 50# model.

No experience with that but got a moultrie automatic control spreader last year…it worked fantastic

Let us know what you think of the spreader Tellico4x4 as the automatic gate shut-off when it's not spinning is very interesting to me. I do all the food plot work by myself and having the gate shut-off when the spinner is turned off would be a hugely helpful feature.

Also, just found them on Amazon with a video of gate closing. Reviews definitely mixed...

Something like this would help in setting "gap" imo & would probably scribe during assembly.

Talked to a knowledgeable lady today & she answered all my questions & told me not to hesitate to call again once I got it if I had any more questions. Was torn between the poly one & metal one, but after I explained how rough our roads were she recommended the poly. Will update once I receive.

I have had the Moultrie spreader without an auto shut gate for several years and they are not made to hold up with fertilizer use. The bearing seals in the motor are crap and will allow the fert dust in which will seize it up. My solution was I found scateboard bearings that are the same size and have now replaced two times in several years and put in plenty of grease and so it still works but will require replacing those bearings sometimes. Bought the bearings off Amazon for about 75 cents each. I can clean and replace one fairly quick now.

We've got 2 of the Moultries that have been used as backup for several years. I never use the seeders for fert or lime. That stuff is easier to spread with tractor imo. Bought a poly whirlybird 7-8 years ago just for that.

I've probably spread 10,000 lbs of pelletized lime and fertilizer through my two Herds. But they are designed for that.
