I bought a Henry singleshot 45-70 last year with intention to convert it. Well, I haven't YET. It's such a nice little gun that I'm gonna carry it during rifle season first. They can be had on GB.

So all your SMLs are insane and look great but I'm looking for more of an entry level gun. However based on some of your posts it seems the CVA Scout may not be heavy barreled enough to shoot out to 300 yds due to not being able to accommodate heavier loads/bullets.

Am I reading that right?

The Scout is 100% in my price range for the gun, would the Henry be a better choice and could it accommodate the heavier load/bullet for longer shots?

Scout will shoot to 300 just fine

I bought a CVA Hunter because I couldn't find a Scout. It's accurate. My hunting buddy took a doe with it on an Oak Ridge hunt this season. My other buddies that have shot it like it. Screenshot_20200502-101149.png20200607_195509.jpg20200604_104831.jpg20200604_111225.jpg

All of the single shot conversions ate about the same strength. The scout brake is removable. I look at it from all angles. Even if you go to a high bc 250gr Pittman Aeromax, the max velocity from the scout still hinders you at greater than 200yd shots. With a 100yd zero, I ran some numbers.
Bullet. Muzzle v. 250yd. 300yd
250startip. 2500mv. 1500 13.2. 1400 24
250 Amax. 2500mv. 1800 11. 1700 20
Bolt gun higher pressure
275 Amax. 3000mv. 2300 6.4. 2150 11

With the conversion delivering 2500fps, you can see the startip has retained velocity of 1500fps and a 13.2" drop at 250. At 300 it retains 1400fps and has a 24" drop. That is a substantial amount of drop. Any canting of the gun will move the poi substantially left or right. You will need a bubble level on your scope and use it on every long range shot. The 250 Accumax at the same 2500 fps, as you can see, carries a little more velocity and drops a little less than the startip. However it still has drops of 11" at 250 and 20" at 300. This all adds complexity to the long shot and makes it harder to make an ethical shot.

Step up to a low end rebarrelled custom like my Black Betty. Shooting a 275 Accumax at 3000 fps, the retained velocity skyrockets, the retained energy doubles to 3200ftlb compared to the 250gr Aeromax at 2500's 1700ftlb of retained energy and the drops are cut in half. This makes the shot easier to pull off with less room for error, requiring less thought, saving time and a whole lot more knock down power out there. Ultimately, the choice is yours. Sure, the scout can do it but with a whole lot more input, thought, and a ton more preparation from you. The scout is a great gun for what it is but I'd never carry a conversion knowing I'd likely have to shoot that far.

I bought the regular old blued and black scout 45/70 and had Hankins convert it .
I have it zeroed at 200 and it shoots 3 inches low at 300 shooting 58.2 grain of IMR 4198 wool wad and a 300 grain fury star tip. I killed a buck at 269 yards with it this year and he looked like a truck hit him . JLancer knows what he is talking about and got me pointed in tbe right direction along with AndyS . Heed their advice i promise you they wont steer you wrong. The target picture is my 200 yard zero first shot high adjusted and second shot fell right in tbere .

i can get one of the regular blued and black scout like you have for $329, no muzzle break, so that may be what I do. I was going to send it to Hankins for sure.
If I do this (provably will) I will be on to bug people about powder, bullets, wads, how much powder, etc. 😂

I think you meant 13" low at 300 with a 200yd zero. Good shot BTW

Yeah I will have to read up on certain aspects of loading as it will be "all new" to me.

Is there any good sources (videos, literature, etc)?
Advice from j lancer and andy got me started an i watched a bunch of hankins YouTube videos. If hankins does it for you he will send you min and max for the gun and do not stray from it it is gospel.
Also his message board is full of great info as well.

one more question. what power is that scope on your gun and how long is the scope? I can get a Trijicon Tenmile pretty cheap, but it is 14.45" long, so may be too much for this gun??

That tenmile is a good deal. But I really like my Huron as a hunting scope. The tenmile would be a much better dialing, long range scope.

well I bought the Hurron. I figured the ten mile would be better at long range, but thought if I had to make a close shot the 6 may be too much, especially in the woods.

I had a 6-24 viper once upon a time and at 30 yards, it wasn't too friendly. I think for what you're wanting, the Huron will do it. I'm kinda a fanboy, and I'm ok with that!
