I can't tell you how many times I have done this! Thanks to PP's customer service it never cost me a dime with free replacement spikes. I even did this once with both PPs down on my big boat that had the drift paddles on them.

lol i was trying to imagine what would happen with drift paddles.
They were the ten footers and I had them most of the way down in about 20 feet of water drifting for tarpon with the downrigger attachments. I saw a school of happy fish pop up so I reeled in the lines, started the motor and took off. Luckily it was obvious nearly immediately and the spikes just flexed and didn't break. The hydraulic cylinders didn't seem to work quite right after that though.
