If you have your latest TN Wildlife magazine, there is a half page write up back toward the end (something like 3-4 pages from the back cover) on TWRA Deputy Director Michael May retiring and going to work for Brandt, the folks that conduct our electronic drawings.....

Could be advantageous later, though. Makes for an ideal liaison to the agency. Same logic as hiring former Congressmen for lobbying firms.

The company's probably betting there will be new Tier II sites in the future and sees this as a way to reassure TWRA that they won't "misunderstand" what Commissioners envisioned.

Michael May came to TWRA as an IT specialist when he left active duty in the US Airforce. He continued his service with the Air National Guard and has steadily climbed the ranks with them.

Michael's professionalism and work ethic were evident from the very beginning with TWRA. He became an Asst. Chief of the IT Div, and then Chief, where he served several years. During that time he worked with Brandt and other vendors on the TWRA electronic license system. I worked with him on those systems as the law enforcement representative to the committee. I am pretty sure Brandt was trying to steal him from TWRA many years ago as he has a superior knowledge of IT systems.

Michael then was named as the Asst. Director over internal operations which included the IT Division that he moved up from. His professionalism followed him every step of the way.

I was not surprised to hear that Brandt had finally hired him away from the agency. The dollars in private industry are certainly more prolific than in state government. Michael was gone from the agency when the waterfowl drawing issues unfolded.

As many know that have followed these threads over the past few months, I have been opposed from the beginning to the changes in the TWRA WMA waterfowl hunts. The debacle has increasingly turned into a real cluster F.

But, I have seen NOTHING that I would lay at the feet of Michael May. I can truthfully say that in the almost forty years that I worked for TWRA, I NEVER worked with anyone with more professionalism and INTEGRITY than Michael. I wish him well in his new job, and thank him for his armed forces service and service to the agency.

If he was gone from the agency was he working at Brandt when they messed the draw process up? TWRA rolled Brandt under the bus in the ppt I saw.

With the fiasco for draws from Brandt the last 2 years, the optics of any higher up at TWRA retiring and going to work for them are bad. There may well be nothing untoward going on, it just looks funny/bad. It gives the appearance of impropriety even if non exists.

Thanks for sharing. It's good to hear things from folks with an insider's knowledge.
