My first MS bird and first off my place. Good feeling for sure. Cloudy and windy this morning. Heard nothing at first light. About 7 I slowly made my way up to a small ridge top plot. Nothing in the plot so decided to pull a card out of my camera to see if any had been using it. After I switched the sd card I said to myself "what the heck". Pulled out my box call and made a soft yelp and had a hen answer me. Dang she was close. Hurried to the edge and sat by a big pine where the road enters this plot. I got the slate out and did some soft purrs and she answered me again so I put it up and got the gun up just in case ole tom boy was with her. Few minutes later the hen entered the plot right where I was standing with two jakes in tow. I watched them for a few minutes and she let out a loud yelp and he hammered still down the ridge a bit but I knew he had to be on the way. Few minutes later I see the prettiest fan coming over the rise. He had another hen with him. Watched them for a few more minutes with him struttin and drumming and trying to run the jakes off. He finally presented a decent shot and I thought now or never. The 870 20ga rolled him at 39 steps. Longbeard XR #6 and Carlson's .575. Tough conditions turned into an awesome morning. Seems it always happens when you least expect it. Least for me it does whether turkey or deer. 10" beard and spurless....weird. Never seen this. Trail cam photo seconds before he got a lead sammich. ha
