Got set up today around 2:15 under a shooting house overlooking a big field and in an area where the turkeys love to roost. Thought maybe I could catch one headed to roost late evening. After about 30 mins of hearing nothing, I kept dozing off and having those ‘nap-jerks’. Decided to do something to wake me up. Hit the Woodhaven slate call —— couple of soft clucks followed by fading yelp or two. BOOM!! One gobbles about 200 yds behind me. I turn a little and get situated. And went silent. A few minutes later, heard a crow cut loose and he gobbled again—-and he was much closer. I hit my Woodhaven red wasp mouth call with a very soft yelp and purr. Saw the red, white and blue head about 75 yds. away. On a beeline to the jake decoy. Then another one. They get to 30 yds out, stop, put up the periscope and I let him have it. It was 3:01 pm. 22 lbs., 10” beard, 1” spurs. Thank you, Lord.
