This. You will probably get a lot of different feed back on this in all kinds of directions. I have seen and I have killed deer walking all kinds of ways except I have never ever killed or seen a mature buck down wind of me. As far as the 2nd rut in years past around December 20th for us. In my experience 2nd rut is very hit and miss and is here and gone in a very short amount of time 2 to 4 days. I'm in Southern middle tn. This time of year they will group back up not uncommon. You mentioned being patient, that is up to you and your standards. If you want to shoot bigger deer and manage than patience is everything. If you are happy doing what you're doing keep doing that. Just all depends on what makes you happy. Some people say deer only walk into the wind I will highly dispute that as I have several on the wall that says otherwise. Imo big deer except when they are rutting, they tend to go from point a to point b in a sufficient manner most don't walk random in daylight. Including pre rut. Even in the rut though bigger deer with does seem to "control" the does better and not just run all over. But if you ever see them bed or see deer bed in general a lot of times they are looking up wind as ski said with the wind blowing in their back.
