A Zuddler kind of weekend

I just noticed the fly fishing subforum. I'm feeling like this could be a Zuddler kind of weekend, so I'm in the process of whipping some up for tomorrow. If there's no further posts from me on this, it means that it was not a Zuddler kind of weekend and I needed to fish bait instead.

I got sloppy with my finishing wraps on this one, but I'm hoping there's enough super glue in there to keep it from self-destructing before I catch a few fish.

We were supposed to get up and head to my inlaws, who have a nice pond, early this AM. I was going to fish while my wife helps her parents around the farm. That all changed sometime last night and we're now not heading out until the heat of the day. But, I'll still spend the day fishing.

I'm hoping to hit a local creek for some SMB tomorrow morning. There, I'll start with some stealth bombers and switch over to streamers when they quit hitting topwater.

The pond was just as smooth as glass when we got to the inlaws. I'd still had a stealth bomber tied on from the other day, so I decided to see if the fish would be interested. I tie these up with EP fibers and marabou for the tail instead of deer hair. The marabou just moves awesome in the water with hardly any action. I also front weight them with 6-8 wraps of .25 lead-free wire. It gives it a straight down dive so I can get maximum action while keeping the fly in the same general area. It's not a big deal on a pond, but when I'm smallmouth fishing I like to keep it as close to cover as I can, for as long as I can.

The little ones were interested. As a matter of fact, they were clobbering it. I caught quite a few cookie cutter ones, like this.

I switched to the Zuddler after :bash: lunch. That was the ticket

I only caught half as many fish, but the big ones came out to play.

I may have to try your bomber mods. I use estaz for the body wrap and calf tail and crystal flash for the tail to minimize fouling. I tend to like my smallmouth flies and lures shorter but bulky/stocky.

92 outside, the UV index was high, and I'm photosensitive from being on doxycycline. It's a perfect time to go fishing. I covided up from head to toe and headed out.

There was a lot of weeds along the edge of the pond so I swapped out my floating line for a sink tip, tied on a stealth bomber and fished this along the weed edge. With the marabou tail that flailed out between strips, it looks just like a frog swimming a foot or so under the surface. I wasn't able to coax any large fish into hitting, but the small ones didn't hesitate.

I got hot, managed to avoid a sunburn, and had a lot of fun doing it.

I sat down Thursday night, wrapped some thread and wire around a hook.

Friday morning I mixed them into a little of this.

And ended up with some of these.
