This morning started slow, with no gobbles close, but I heard one in the distance. Decided to sit tight, and after an hour or so of soft calling, a hen came in and messed around for 20 minutes or so. We purred and yelped real quiet back and forth. I resisted the urge to try to get her fired up, she just didn't seem interested. After about twenty minutes of feeding chatter I quiet yelped again and a bird cut loose within fifty yards. It was in heavy cover, and just over a rise, so I couldn't see it. At that point, I kept on with the same chatter and over the hill came 8 hens and 2 longbeards in full strut. They were shuffling along and staying close together. I tried everything to get em to break strut, but it wasn't happening this morning. Finally this one separated from the flock enough that I was able to get a clean shot. It was a nice morning, and way differnt than most of my succesful turkey hunts. Average 2 year old. Nothing special and a little light, but he'll eat alright.
