Whippoorwills live in young forest. Our forests continue to age out of good habitat
This, I honestly did not know. Thinking back to when I was a kid though, one area I did my most turkey killing was owned by small family-owned logging operation. It was in a perpetual state of patchwork selective cutting and whippoorwills will were everywhere.

Sounds like this sort of goes back to same answer for so many critters that were abundant at one time and now are not. Habitat loss.

My scardy-cat 6 year old cannot and I mean CANNOT sleep with the window open in the spring/summer because of those things. She's terrified of them, and I can't get her to not be afraid of them. We have no shortage of them at all at our place.
Yeah they are definitely in our parts. My cousin cusses them out every morning and evening each spring. Quite comical

Once it warmed up a tad I have one above the house almost every evening. He then moves on down the valley. Last week I woke up before sunrise and headed to the back porch with coffee and a cigar. I could hear him off in the distance. Reminds me of our little cabin on Bear Creek/Mill Creek at Pickwick back in the 70's. I could hear them in the house with the doors closed.
