I worked this bird for nearly 3 hours yesterday. Had him at 35 yards and 5 yards without getting a shot. Yesterday, I had my gun ready on the left side of a huge Boulder, I could hear him coming and just knew he was going step out behind it at 20 yards any second. Instead he hops on top of the Boulder, looks at me sitting there 5 yards away, and takes off. I went back after him this morning, he was roosted in a different spot, but it was a better spot. I got within 75 yards or so of the roost, had a perfect bench leading to him, just perfect for him to walk down the gun barrel. Instead, he hits the ground, and circles above me, I couldn't move at all, he gets 5 yards behind me and stands there gobbling his head off. I was so thankful for good cover. It was intense, nothing like a gobbler 5 yards behind you gobbling like mad and you can't even see it. After several minutes, he began walking off, I waited until he entered my peripheral vision, and watched him go behind some large trees. At that point, I adjusted and got a 25 yard shot. One thing really cool for me on this one, I only used this slate call that my dad built for me this year. He just got into making calls, but they sound really good. I have several other states to hunt now, but will also just take weekends to camp with the family.
