@WTM- Don't they get given a new boat every year? That's the way it works for my buddies in the salt. They get a new boat(s) each year which they then sell the following year as a one year old boat, tricked out and with a 4-5 year warranty. Many of these boats in the salt are well north of $100k. I haven't priced a bass boat as I have no interest in owning a "glitter sparkle" as my 6 year old son calls them.

like rick clunn once said, if youre gonna be on the pro tour be prepared to be poor for a while, work a job or guide and better not be married.

watch this video, they explain it pretty well.

I fly fish for trout and a few other fish but for the last 8 years, 98% of my fishing has been for carp. Hard to pass up a 20 lb. fish that takes line like a Mack truck going downhill in neutral. Started FFing for carp this past summer.

Lots of fun seeing old rubber lips hit a dry fly!!!! What is amazing is to see these things be so selective.

yeah thats a big myth among most folks out of the know. there are maybe a dozen pro's that have fairly generous sponsorships, ike, van dam, skeet reese to name a couple that make a little more than $500k. then you have maybe 25 guys that make $50k and the rest are lucky to get $500 bucks a month plus a little bonus money if they win. put that up against the $100k JUST FOR entry fees, lodging and gas.

a lot of these guys have day jobs or family businesses that allow them the time and money to fish, even then fishing is treated like a business.
Pondering this. How much do the guys and gals get for all the advertising stuck on their boats and trucks plus their shirts? I had a customer who fished the Red Man Circuit in Texas and fished BASS for a couple of years. He got freebies.

yeah they get free baits, line and stuff like that and probably all they want. if they place in the money then they may get a bonus check from a sponsor for having an ad on their boat.

like i said, you may have 20 or so guys placing in the top money but you have 60 guys that arent. it was a different story when BASS was the only pro tourney. when FLW started up it jacked up the entry fees and prize money. now there is MLF and its even spread more thin with sponsor money.

Contingency money is where people make money that that aren't on a fully paid sponsorship. Many of them require the people to have a logo visible during competition and contingency adds up. When I shot competition archery, I only had 1 sponsor and that was an arrow company. But, I could sign up for contingency for the other products I used...sights, arrow rest, release, bow company, etc and if I placed in the top 3, then I would get a contingency check from those companies. For winning the tournament, I might only get say $1,200 but from contingency, I could actually get more than the actual tournament winnings. In fishing, it is similar to that but there is more money to go around in fishing vs archery. Basically in archery, as an amateur you were shooting to try and just recover your traveling fees and such and maybe some extra for equipment upgrades. In fishing it's pretty much the same. When the pro circuits come to Dayton to fish Lake Chickamauga, some of the pro anglers will stay in my hometown of Athens and I don't mean in hotels either. Some of them will just find a vacant parking lot or Walmart parking lot and sleep in their vehicles. You would think in higher profile tournaments like the BASS Elite series that they would all have giant sponsorship deals and all be put up in fancy hotels, etc. That's not the case at all for most of em. I was quite surprised myself.

That's a real shame. I fished redfish tournaments for a few years when there was money in them. Ranger and Yamaha used to give $1k each for top 20 finishes so I bought a skiff and my partner bought a bay boat so we would be covered regardless of the fishery we were in. We never had any sponsorship revenue but also never paid for tackle, baits, etc and the extra $2k a couple times a month paid for the boats, gas, entry, etc.
you gotta be in the top 50 to make money. from the 11th spot to 50th is around $10k. thats enough to cover that tourney and the next one.

the guys that do well fishing for a living are the ones that can win consistently in those tourney's.

Just think of all the money you could save if you tied your own flies.

I tie my own but use things found at Hobby Lobby and under the trees in the yard. A pack of feathers will last a long time. For East Tennessee, I only tie 6-8 flies and use a Dr. Slick lanyard with two small fly boxes- wet and dry flies. I have nine tackle boxes of various sizes on the shelf, gathering dust and dog hair. I break out a small one to fish with the grandkids in a local pond. That's not counting my carp fishing tackle.

Fly Fishing doesn't have to be expensive but it certainly can be (like anything).

I cut my teeth fly fishing as a teenager chasing bluegills and bass. I would ditch the plastic worms and crankbaits to throw poppers, and if mayflies were out or bream were bedding — it was on with small popping bugs. Loads of fun and very low cost.

Now I spend a lot of time chasing trout on the fly, multiple rods in 4, 5, and 6 wt. Like the original poster, I can walk out of the fly shop with a very small bag of fly tying supplies (beads, hooks, etc) and wonder how I spent that much. But it's fun!
Love the picture

I looked at the ads for bass boats in the BASS publications. It would cost a fortune just to fill the tank. My old boat had two six gallon tanks. Twelve gallons @$1.94 equals to 23.28 plus oil. Am going out and kiss my canoe when it gets warmer. I get about 5 hours on two glazed donuts and a cup of joe.
