Big Harpeth River GAR

Was fishing for bass as I have been catching several nice largemouth and smallmouth. Check out this GAR - I am not sure how big they get in the Harpeth but this was my largest...

That's a big one, did you get your spinnerbait back? The water looks really clear. I've never eaten them, but have seen where people cut them into steaks and prepare them like that, and say they are good. I've got a couple spots I know of to get into them in numbers when they are spawning.

I was able to get the lure out with a pair of pliers while the fish was still in the water and watched him swim away. I have never kept a gar.

Gar have always been considered a trash fish around here. And a lot of them have been left laying on the banks where they were caught. Now they have discovered that they are one of the few things that will eat asian carp so it is being encouraged to put them back into impoundments that have a population of them.

This is the best time of year to fish the harpeth. Fish a blue smoke colored tube(1/8-16 worm weight inside) and thank me later.
