My dad had one just like this. It would cycle 3" and 2 3/4" magnums perfectly. It would also cycle 1 1/4 oz heavy field loads 80% of the time. Lighter loads would not cycle the bolt.
We squirrel hunted there back in September and there was actual corn and soybean in some of the fields. I was kinda shocked! You are correct, the bird and deer populations has definitely declined.
The board showed 3 checked in as of 11:55am. I heard a couple of toms going nuts at daybreak, then silence. Had 3 hens feeding withing 30yards of me for a couple of hours. Thought the live bait might help, but I guess not...
I saw one near the North/South trail at LBL one fall ~20 years ago. Puzzled me why it was so far from water. My buddies thought I was nuts (and still do)!
Sounds like a great time hunting, unfortunately the turkeys didn't cooperate. Been deer hunting there for 30 years and the turkey sightings have declined drastically over the last 10 years.
I don't turkey hunt there, but I do spend a week every November bowhunting and I have not seen/heard a turkey in 3-4 years now. Hogs have taken over the place. Used to see tons of turkey "back in the day" and managed to arrow a few. Those days are gone it seems...
I got one from Boyd's Stocks for my daughters 10/22 and it worked out great for not much $$. Custom length of pull and some special engraving. For a Rem 700, I would plan on skim bedding it just for the sake of better accuracy.
Looking for a plain Jane 870 for a project, nothing fancy. Plastic or wood stock doesn't really matter. Located in Knoxville but will drive a reasonable distance. Thanks!!
