I got all set up this morning before daylight... had a few turkeys behind me bock bock bocking away... I hit my 15 year old turkey call (yep..been using the same ole call for 15 years..lol) and I mean out of the blue it sounded like someone was in the woods beside me and sat down on one of those little canned air horns you keep under your boat seat... my heart skipped a beat... I didnt know if I should crap or go blind.. it was a daagone PEACOCK.. that joker must have had feathers 10 feet long... He didnt come to my decoy but this ole boy did.. took his head apart at 10 yards...

Yeah man, a peacock will definitely get your attention (especially when you don't expect it).

In the predawn darkness a buddy and I eased in on a roosted bird that was gobbling on the limb. We sat next to each other on a big oak and got ready for the show. We both kept hearing some rustling in the leaves between us; he thought it was me and I thought it was him. When it finally got light enough to see we both looked down at the same time to see some beady eyes looking back...we'd sat on a big'ol long black snake.

Forget the dang turkey...I let out a howl and buddy was hollerin' like a little girl. You never seen 2 toe-headed idiots move so fast. We went one way and the gobbler went the other!

hahaha NICE!

i had a bird gobble literally 7ft directly behind me one time and i had NO IDEA he was there. He ran off when it scared me so bad i dropped my gun that was on my knee hahah

Congrats on the turkey. Got a peacock close to a place I hunt and yeah they can catch you off guard. Thing that got me was a skunk last year. I was set up amongst some small scrub cedar bushes on a pipeline and kept hearing something to my right. When I finally saw it it was 10' max from me and I jumped and moved quicker than I probably ever had. Encountered him the weekend before and decided twice was enough.

Off topic I guess, but what kinda shotgun do you have? I have a H&K tactical that looks like that one.
its a beretta..I got it after I lost my charles daly in the tennessee river..lol

Congrats on the bird.

To answer the question, yes. Heck yesterday morning was pretty terrifying with lightening hitting the ground all over the mountain top.

However, my scariest moment came several years ago. I had walked into a place super early to hopefully be in the back pocket of some birds I had been chasing for several days. As it began to get hazy light a bird gobbled behind me about 50 yards away. with that hens start calling down below me, which at this point is perfect. I eek out a very light tree yelp and the bird rips it back. I've gotten to kow these birds a little and am assuming he will pitch down like before on the hill side in front of me and die. In a few minutes I hear him flap and come down only I hear him hit in the leaves behind me and gobble, no big deal the woods are greened out and I'll let him slide past and kill him. In no time I hear something in the leaves coming in right behind me, I don't move a muscle at it gets closer and closer and closer. Soon it is within a foot of my right shoulder and still coming, but it doesn't sound like a turkey in the leaves. With that out of the corner of my eye I catch movement coming along side me and its a dang skunk who is headed for my thigh.

At this point I'm stuck, the skunk is 12" from me and coming in for a pat on the head, meanwhile I can hear the dang turkey drumming not 30 yards away and coming around my left side. I decide the best approach is to ignore the skunk. They can't see anything hardly, so maybe he'll ease on by. Well of course that didn't happen, and the skunk ends up putting one of its paws literally on my leg as it tries to decide how to navigate past me. At this point I'm almost physically ill from everything going down and now the turkey pops into view and easily kill able, but if I shoot it the skunk sprays me.

I decide to just remain still and thankfully the skunk sensed something wasn't right and proceeded to move on, allowing me to kill the turkey.

Not a life or death situation but its as scared as I've ever been in the turkey woods.
