I got a squirt this morning that had something growing in it's back. I did my best Dr Pimple Popper imitation and removed some kind of larva from the sore.

Yes, the old timers call them 'wolves or warbles'. That's a larvae from a botfly, the adult fly bites the host and lays an egg that turns into the larvae you removed.
They don't affect the meat, as they burrow just under the skin.
