wow !

in the baltimore area they eat those darn things. call them swamp bunnies. never could even bring myself to try them as they have a sickly sweet meaty smell to them. skinned a lot of them as a kid running a trap line. the carcasses made great fox bait anyway.

It's red.. but they only eat grass and roots... really tender.. muskrats tear apart when skinning them if your not careful.. I don't remember mine having a fishy taste..

thats tru dat pressfit regarding the tender meat. because of that i do regret not trying to at least fry one.

always thought after i grew up how much i'd like to have a pair of mittens made of muskrat. used to run my hand up inside the stretcher and admire how soft the fur was. i think silk may be the only thing that comes close.

Interesting , for some reason I thought they ate mussel shells as well,,...

They feed on cattail and other aquatic vegetation. ... Plant materials compose about 95% of their diets, but they also eat small animals, such as freshwater mussels, frogs, crayfish, fish, and small turtles. Muskrats follow trails they make in swamps and ponds.
