How in the wide world of sports did he think he'd explain his way out of that?
Fentress County is a whole 'nother place. If I had to guess, I'd say he figured he'd never have to explain it, and that if push did come to shove, he could claim it was stolen. Reminds me of law enforcement in some third world countries I've worked in.

I've worked cases where LEOs have sold, given away or pawned DoD weapons on loan to their agencies. Shotguns, semi M-14s and Glocks.
One Glock here in TN was pawned, then bought by a gang member's girlfriend and eventually used in a domestic assault.
Not one single person was ever charged.

When we deployed to Desert Shield, our Rear-D armorer sold a few of our new M16s that had come in after we left. It would probably have gone unnoticed except one of his family members then went and tried to resell it. These were select fire weapons, so the pawnshop knew right away.
