there used to be a sporting goods store in Memphis that had one of those mounted. It was unreal just how BIG that thing was in person. Pics don't do the size justice.

A facility I used to work at kept this species. They are quite fearless animals and can crumble a cow femur with a few chomps.
A colleague studied them in S Africa. They would hang out on the edge of large cities and hit the dumps (much like bears here). He showed me a video of one literally eating an empty glass jelly jar.

There's lots to intimidate you in various places in Africa, but hyenas have always made my short hairs stand up….just thinking about hunting there. Not sure they're more worth being afraid of than some other animals, but there's just something about a predator that's as big as a lion, but is neither big cat nor wolf nor bear nor anything else like it in the world.

It is considered endangered by the United States. It does not have that classification in Africa.
