Weird Gun Auction Rule?

There is a C&R weapon I have been looking for and it is listed on an auction site by a local gun store. The pictures weren't so great so I decided to go to the store and take a look. Arsenal marks and condition are important.
When I got there I was told, No, I can't look at it. One guy said, "That wouldn't be fair to the other bidders." What?
Then I was told they don't keep the gun there and that even if one of their employee wants to buy it, they can't look at it and have to bid against anyone else. Really?
I've bought from them before (good pictures), won the online auction and simply went to the store to complete the purchase.

Has anyone else ever encountered something like this?

That seems very weird. I can understand that plenty of people will bid/buy sight unseen, but to refuse inspection when you are at the shop doesn't seem a very up-front practice.

They are hoping to get more out of it by not letting anyone see it doesn't have the high dollar marks
