A hurt player is significant.
Why shouldn't it be a factor in rankings?
It should be way way way down the list

Record
Strength of schedule
Head to Head matchups
Common opponent matchups

And many more should be more valuable

Like if you you beat a team Head to head. Then beat a common opponent on the road by 30, that the team you beat head to head lost to,and finished the season with the same record, and a better SOS You should be ranked ahead of said team.

But Moral victories and a hurt player seem to trump those things.

Head to head match-ups are high on the list. I've already posted the main criteria. But here it is again: https://www.sicom/fannation/college...playoff-rankings-top-25-how-cfp-process-works Hurt players fall into the category highlighted in the quote below:

"Selectors are allowed to use a variety of advanced analytics to gauge teams' performance, but those numbers don't play a formal role in determining Top 25 rankings, which is a decision made by selectors' own judgement."

A hurt starting (Heisman candidate) Quarterback isn't exactly the same as a hurt 3rd string punter. Unfortunately both the Vols and USC lost very valuable players to injury That is a big factor in the strength of the team

Usually there is a clear front runner by now. Or two… this year is so dang crazy I don't know who gets it. Corum, hooker and now Williams all hurt. Stroud and young didn't produce when needed. Might be a good year for a defensive player to catch the award.
