I never understood why (in practical terms) someone would need a sound dampening device for a crossbow when you really only get that one shot. Even if the deer doesn't spook from the sound of the crossbow (assuming you missed your target), he is probably going to see you re-cocking the crossbow. The noise that an un-dampened crossbow makes is not enough to alert a deer that's 150-200 yards away...so if it's avoiding collateral scaring of the deer that the manufacturer is selling, that doesn't make sense either.
