Not to nitpick, but that is not a tank. It is actually a self-propelled gun, essentially a mobile artillery piece. Good if you want to hit a deer 5 miles away and you can lob one in just so...

Yes, you can have shells. Most are just billet metal. They do not require registration. Quite a few folks load for canons and artillery.
Technically, you could have a HE shell (high explosive), but is considered it's own DD, with it's own registration. If fired, you report the destruction to BATF.
