Anyone know of a source of seed corn cheaper than co op prices? I lost my Nwtf source.

Check with some local farmers.
They usually give me their left overs.
Local AG agent is a good source at times for some free samples

I have planted 1 and 2 year old seed with great success if it were stored properly. Doing a germination test this weekend on some 3 year old RR I found 4 bags of.

That’s basically what we’ve done in the past. Planted about 20 soybeans in a 5 square foot area and checked it 2 weeks later. They all came up.

We did it with 2 year old corn one year and only a few came up

Its easier than that. I use 2 saucers or plates
lay 2 sheets of paper towel on the plate
place 100 kernels on each
fold paper towels over to cover and wet thoroughly.
keep wet twice a day, keep warm
it takes about 3 days.
count what didnt sprout, the difference is the germ rate
2 second plate is just for confirmation

you must keep it wet!

I dont because its usually trashy and will not flow well in my planter plus the various kernel sizes either drop 2 or crush one. There is another reason but I have never seen it pursued, unless you were producing for market. That is that the rights to that genome belongs to someone who wants paid for the use of it.

We did something like that not as many seeds when I was in high-school biology.

Because of the nature of hybrid genetics it is unlikely to produce a good crop. It is very inconsistent.

Yes. There has been some pretty nasty lawsuits by monsanto over round up ready corn being planted without purchasing the rights
