Forty or so years ago I had one with a Bushnell Banner II 1-1/2-4x with a heavy post reticle. Always felt that was a perfect setup for that gun.
i have that scope on a Winchester model94 that i recently acquired. i have a Bushnell Scope Chief 4X on the Marlin now. looking to upgrade as my old & tired eyes need a little clear optic.

I've had a Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5x32 on 2 different Marlin 336s in 35 Rem. One I currently still have and another I stupidly sold to a member on this site. Instantly regretted it, and bought another. I'm really happy with it.

I have a red field 3x9 on a Marlin 30-30, it came with the gun in 91 from service merchandise. Never seen a need to change it.

My 35 is open sights never got around to putting a scope on it even though it was drilled and taped before I got it.

I use a Leupold 1.5-5x20 on my Marlin. Sits down low and didn't have to remove the rear sight….

I've had a Redfield 2-7x33 mounted low on mine for years now and it works great. If using it strictly for a woods gun, though, and you're willing to spend that much I'd at least check out eBay for a higher end used Leupold 1-4x20mm.
