I'm trry'n to learn more about catch'n walleyes, me & my cuz'n go every now & then but dont have a lotta luck, hes been at for a good many years now but judging form the lack of fish I'm really doubt'n his walleye know how.

Mostly we fish center hill, tims ford, every now & then normandy, set out lights & either catch the shad that show up & use them for bait, or use a sonar spoon & jig it off the side, with no luck might I add, but he says it works...

I'm guess'n they would be considered a cold water fish & most of what I've read seems to be for catching them "up north", nothing for walleye from the southern states, plus I dont know anything about their preferred habitat, spawning, feeding or seasonal habits.

What have ya'll learned about any of this or the tricks you use for cathing them ??

Re: School me one walleye.

Even though this has been sorta an off year for us we catch them in the summer during daylight with nightcrawler and spinner, trolling just fast enough to make the spinner turn and typically from 18 to 25 feet in the main lake and much shallower at the head of the lake. My friend and I limited 2 years ago when the surface temp was 91 degrees.
Also we crappie fish at night with a light and we jig with spoon while waiting on crappie bite and we pick up 3 or 4 walleye a night.
I've seen a lot of walleye tourneys on TV and they catch them the same way. Trolling plugs will catch them too but I do very little of that myself.

Re: School me one walleye.

I have trolled for them a lot during the daylight using a bottom bouncer rigged with night crawlers. 20' down give or take. July and August have always been the best months for us

Nice walleye.

Try jigging with nightcrawlers

Re: School me one walleye.

For the record : it supposed to be school me ON,,,not one, I'm that way sometimes.

M338: those would look great in a plate fried up purty & brown, nice work.

Thanks for the info guys, we need all the help we can get, fuel & eats cost to much for a no fish catching trip.

Re: School me one walleye.

What would determine where we need to look for them, rocky bottoms, drop offs, transition from shallow to deep ??

And would deep water temps make a difference ??

Thanks again.

Re: School me one walleye.

A slate bank is good or even just mud. Too many hangups fishing chunk rock. Most of ours come off a sloping bank unless we go up into the headwaters and then it's basically just river bottom.
I can only measure surface temps and summertime fish are typically in 20 feet range so I can't tell what the temp is down deep. I do know they bite no matter what the surface temp is, at least up to the low 90s.

Re: School me one walleye.

i fish for them at night in the spring when the shad spawn is going on...we use long bill rebel plugs and topwater plugs to catch them..nothing like having a 8-10lber blow up on topwater at night!!!!

Re: School me one walleye.

Erie Dearie with a crawler attached has always been good on the Hill. Best area is above or around Hurricane bridge. We did best trolling close to drop-offs as slow as we could and still keep the spinner going.

Crawler on a spinner rig with a weight on three-way swivel is also good.
