What they do not mention is that all the poor people in Tennessee can go to school absolutely free, and pocket some money in the process. If they need a job, or a better one, they can apply themselves and get an education. They can even get free transportation to and from school.

Second, while our sales tax is higher than most, we do not have an income tax. We as Tennessee residents have chosen this. The person that wrote this sounds like a libtard that believes taking more money from the working people and giving it to those without the desire to work is the answer to all problems.

Thirdly.....we have tried for years to throw money at schools and have learned it is not the solution. Accountability is the solution. No child left behind has all but ruined out school systems. It is time for failing students to fail, and hard working students to be rewarded. If the parents know they will be penalized for allowing their kids to goof off in school, they will not allow it. It is not like they don't have the time to push the kids to do well is it?

What the author views as terrible circumstances in Tennessee are better than conditions in 90% of the rest if the world - including the collectivist nations and economies the author clearly adores. Tennessee is doing just fine, relatively speaking. His view has proven to be miserable, debt-ridden failure half the world over.

I see this as a good thing. A liberal hack that writes for a liberal hack site is telling the liberal douche bags that visit the site that TN isn't for them.

I'm all for keeping these types out of our state.

Exactly my thoughts. I dont know about the rest of you, but I rather love TN. I have been to a bunch of other states, but I choose to stay here. I would love to know where this idjit is from, my guess is a liberal state like NY, CA, MI, or Illinois. If its so much better there, then by all means stay put, we have enough implants that are trying to change things to make it more like "home".

So TN is dead last for % of tax revenue collected? That means they lead the nation in the ability of working people to keep the money they have earned! I see that as a good thing! And, their sales tax is regressive? That means the "takers" like illegal alens have to pay some of their share for services like health care, EMS, police, fire, schools & a host of other services which are largely funded by the "makers" eg people who work. What's so wrong about that?

Does anyone else remember when the "white flight" from California to Colorado started? That's how you turn a magnificent state into a petting zoo. Colorado WILL have very similar hunting laws to California in the next twenty years. It's the liberal way.
As for the link, didn't read it and don't need to. As long as they think there is a disadvantage to live in a state with low tax revenues, maybe Tennessee will survive.

Cutting aid to families who's kids are not making good grades makes little sense to me...

It will only put more pressure on the child at home and many of them live in bad situations to begin with and if you take 30% of their money away, the dead beat families will take it out on the child, which is wrong...imo.

No good answer, I know, but this is really not going to do anything. Heck, most of the families aren't smart enough to help the kids anyway.

I have no idea what the answer is, but imo, this is not it.

They only cut aid if that family refuses any of the three or four FREE programs to help the child (and parent) improve.

Yes. it makes PERFECT sense. It it too much to ask for a little EFFORT from those living on the labors of others?

Personal responsibility IS the 'good' answer.

The article was written by Les Leopold who writes tons of articles and books against capitalism.

In response to this particular collective drivel....

New York spends $14, 119 per student. National average is $8,701, Tennessee spends $7,992
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/30/educa ... ensus.html

New York has between a 22% illiteracy rate well above the national average of 14%.

http://www.newsli.com/2009/01/26/new-yo ... acy-rates/

What are Les's thoughts on the success of New York public schools and the rate of achievement in Socialist terms?

Tennessee has an 86.1% graduation rate.

New York has a 74% Graduation rate

I completely agree that articles like this are great, because the people who read these kinds of things on a regular basis have no business living here. They already have their utopias, let us keep ours.

This was actually the most encouraging thing I've read in a while. The Bible says that if you aren't persecuted than you aren't serving your lord correctly. Maybe this is a parallel. If the country is full of people who are bent on destroying it, the ultimate complement is them not agreeing with you. On anything.

TN should strive for even lower taxes (the horror!!) and let the rest of the country continue to rant about how terrible we are while Nashville get's ranked the best city to live and work, Chattanooga continues to land job after job, and our countryside remains one of the most beautiful and affordable places to live on earth.

Please tell us again how successfull Big City Socialsm has been in NY.

"The five worst graduation rates in the Bronx belong to Evander Childs High School (41.4%), which closed in 2008, Alfred E. Smith Career and Technical Education (35.3%), Adlai E. Stevenson High School (34.2%), closing this month, Bronx High School for Law and Community Service (31.6%), and Jane Addams High School for Academic Careers. (29.3%)"
