Maybe 40 years ago, I was scouting a large pond on the top of a hill for ducks and spotted what I thought was a black angus calf sleeping in the pasture. I had left my binoculars (and shotgun) in the truck so I wasn't exactly positive. The more I looked at the dark spot I changed my mind and thought it was a piece of tar paper that had blown to that spot. Anyways, I started walking toward it and got within 30 yards when a smallish black coyote jumped up and took off like the devil was after it. This would have been in Bedford county. The landowner said that his farm manager had killed 3 dark coyotes in his feed lot out of a pack of 6 that were harassing the cows.
