Even if you are shooting TSS, its still critical to know the range to a gobbler to assure an ethical shot. Thought some might want to give this a read. It's from my old column in Turkey & Turkey Hunting Magazine.

I usually do just like when I bow hunt. I range a few objects around me with a range finder when I set up. Anything that crosses those pre ranged objects are within range.

playing a lot of golf growing up always help me with yardage. However this may sound silly but I also have always looked at it like this, "can I throw a football that far" lol. Played a lot of sports growing up and know how hard it is to throw a football 40yds much less 50. Just always something that clicked in my mind.

Good article and good advice.

I come from the time period of slow bows and no rangefinders. You either learned how to range animals or you lost a lot of arrows.

That being said, I don't hunt field birds and most places I hunt you can't shoot 40 yards.
