Pulled a couple of cards today...

Exxxxxxcellent. Are you able to id any of these from last year? Tracking individuals from one year to the next?

Bet you aren't excited about hunting this year at all, are ya? ;)

Nice pics, looks like a great place with some good deer!

Yes, here is the 8 point from last year. I passed him a couple of times, but he didn't grow much so he will not get a pass this year.

good looking bucks but it looks like your bigger bucks got taken out last year!! Any pictures of them??

I know two of the bigger bucks were killed last year. I also know of a few that made it through the season as I got their pics in January, but who knows where they are now? Hopefully they will show up soon.

That explains the small difference (going from 4 1/2 to 5 1/2).
He may end up with more mass than it appears at present.

I'd probably not let him walk next time, unless you simply don't want to use a buck tag and/or have your sights set on other mature bucks.

A few years ago I had one was simply unable to kill until he reached what I believed to be his 7 1/2 year. He appeared to lose a lot of tine length going from 6 1/2 to 7 1/2. Not that I wouldn't have taken him at 5 1/2 and 6 1/2, but just didn't get anything but low-probability running shots which I didn't take.

Most bucks seem to gain a "worth the wait" mass increase going from 4 1/2 to 5 1/2, although their overall score may not increase but a very few inches. (Mass impresses me personally more than score.)

I suspect once you have hard-antler pics, you'll notice some increase in mass with this buck, and you'll be very satisfied with having passed him last year, regardless of whether you get him this year. More about the journey than the destination.

That jump in mass at 5.5 to 7.5 years is often very noticable; especially if you have pics and can compare from year to year. By 4.5 they seem to have their frame pretty puch defined, and just put on mass after that.

Honestly, I have a really difficult time identifying deer from age 1.5-3.5 years simply by antler characteristics...just hard for me to confidently do. Ripped ear, distinctive markings, or maybe an injust or something and it's easier but I'm just not very good at it.
