Food Plots Plot Ideas

The area near the white dot or what I refer to as "the bottleneck". Right at 2 acres and was farmed in the past but has been put into a wetlands program. There are no stipulations other than the farmer is not going to work it any longer! I can let it grow up, mow strips or make it a plot now.
Looking for ideas as to what you guys would do. The only draw back is, it is the only way I have into the timber via motorized vehicle and mostly foot traffic as there is a huge ditch bordering the timber all the way around the big field. Its actually levee'd up on the field side and is a duck hole.
Turkeys use it early season and the deer do cross it heading South.
would be the primary food source during the winter as the other spots I have for plots flood especially if the river gets out.
It does stay somewhat wet and the farmers crop there was always full of cuckleburrs and trash but not awful.
I almost want it in like CRP and mow paths for bedding but knowing its my only way in/out concerns me.

Ideas?

I'd probably be inclined to just mow it a couple times a year and throw the lime and fertilizer to it. Get natural grasses and forbs in there as healthy as they can possibly be.
Do you think with the previous farming practices natural growth will take off pretty good or should I throw something to aid in getting it started?
I also thought about stripping some clover around it.

Hard to say without looking at it. I don’t think that’s a bad idea - throwing some clover down, then mowing. That way the thatch can cover it for better germination. You’ll have clover and some natural browse without putting too much time and money into it in the event it does flood.
