I was curious if its feasible to plant your own persimmon trees and grow them? Or is it better to buy them from a nursery? And after they are planted, how many years before they bear fruit?

I picked up some persimons last year and planted this spring only one came up .I will try again this fall so it all depends on how big a hurry youre in . I have no idea how long it takes for them to fruit , but I do know its a long time . Sawtooth oaks are about the quickest tree you can plant and see results in 5 or 6 years.

If you are wanting to plant your own persimmons from seed that you have found you have to striate them first. Harvest your seeds and make sure the fleshy part is removed. Then get a baggie and place some sand in it and then dampen it. Place your seeds into the baggie and place it into the refrigerator for about 3 months take out the seed and plant them. After growing for about 8-10 years you should start to see some results. I have had better luck with this method than buying and planting but it is just what you want to do.

I have done this as well.... Belive me its much easier to buy, save time and money! They are not expensive. From nursery you can get 6-8 ft for 8-10 dollars. Thats what I did..

well, I'm planning on planting them behind my house. So, length of time to actually grow them is not that big of a factor. I'd just really like to grow them so when they actually do start producing fruit I can watch the wildlife from my dining room window.
