My mother and I counted 9 fogs during August. We've done this for years. It's supposed to equate to 9 snows. Not always completely accurate, but it's a tradition we've kept going since I was a kid in Kentucky.

Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) suggests a cold and somewhat early winter, certainly setting in by December, and possibly mid-November.

One thing to remember is the link between the weather in May and winter weather. Warm May, warm winter. Cold May, cold and early winter. And we had a May well below average this year.

I remember reading a paper by some enterprising meteorology grad student that looked at all the "folklore" forecasting methods. Unsurprisingly, their accuracy was about zero percent.

You can see a squirrel twitch it's tail at 200 yards easily with snow on the ground! By the same token, a deer can see you most likely farther than that! :D
