Doing a little research - what are some things that you always make sure you have going into deer season?

For me:

Can bleat call
Grunt call
razor blade knife for gutting
small t-handle saw for cutting thru bone
usually a bottle of Tink's #69
scent wicks and/or drag pad
small pair of binos
and my climber

Are you going to scare them to death or do you carry something to kill them with!!!

Also add water, rope and TP.

For a typically morning or afternoon hunt (4-5 hrs). Flashlight, knife, binos/strap, safety harness, and my phone. Add whatever weapon and ammo.

bow, gun, arrows or bullets, climber and safety harness (unless ground hunting), pocket knife (kept shaving sharp), phone, camera, something to eat/drink. Binocs are a plus but I didn't even have a pair last deer season. Sometimes I bring a homemade grunt call but don't feel much need to use it.

I also wish I would always bring rope for field dressing and hauling the deer out of the woods but I don't usually remember.

And the most important thing that nobody should ever forget.... TP!!

- gun/ ammo
- skinning knife
- 100ft paracord
- skatchet
- phone
- extra bottle of scent killer
- extra socks
- small first aid kit with superglue
- lighter and flint/ steel
- carry pistol and extra mag (simply because its always there)

pretty much it on me- all fits in a fanny pack other than my carry pistol. The fanny pack stays in the back of the truck year round. Blanket/ water/ snack bars, etc. are in the truck.

I used to always forget a rope but then finally got used to just tying some hay twine around my waist like a belt as part of my morning routine. But now I've gotten to the point that I just walk back to the house and get the truck. :)

Weapon, ammunition for that weapon, calls for some species, water, a flashlight, and a knife. Aside from dressing appropriately, I can't think of anything else that is absolutely essential.

I mostly hunt public land and many of the walks to my stands are not short. That being said, these are my 'must haves'...

- weapon / ammo / treestand
- backpack
- binos
- pull up rope
- strap or step to hang backpack and bow or rifle
- water or gatorade, high carb snacks
- handheld GPS & smartphone
- led headlamp
- small led flashlight
- knife / buttout tool / vinyl gloves / steel stick
- a couple of ziplock bags
- small hand saw and /or pruners
- small pack of scent free wet wipes instead of TP
- powder wind indicator
- brown bright eyes if I haven't already marked a way in / out
- Evercalm
- Thermacell depending on time of year
- extra pair of socks
- extra layers depending on the weather and two bungee cords to strap them to my stand or pack

I'm having a hard time comprehending the notion that deer calls could be considered "absolutely essential", "essential" or a "must have" item. You don't need it to survive any situation you might encounter in the woods (lost, stranded, hypothermic, treestand fall), you don't need it to gut or butcher a deer, you don't need it to see a deer, judge the distance to a deer, or kill a deer and plenty of deer (probably the majority of deer in the Southeast) are killed without the aid of such items.
So... if you forgot your rattlebag, grunt tube, and/or can call, you wouldn't go hunting? Seems like a item that is difficult to classify as important as a knife, flashlight, cellphone or a small first aid kit.
lol I would absolutely not go hunting if I didn't have the calls or scents but I listed what I have in my backpack

I could list everything I bring but a lot of it isn't essential. For an all day walk in hunt I carry a knife, backpack, saw, rope, plastic bags for the liver and heart, tp, gps, matches, spaceblanket, bottle of water and a snack. Oh yeah and a seat cushion And my weapon.
