I see no advantage if your not shooting 3.5" shells , the 500 is a great operating shotgun that has a bunch of after market parts if wanted, I bought a 28" barrel from a member here and like it better than the 24" for dove hunting. also have a rifled barrel but the sabot slugs kick to beat the band lol

You can shoot slugs through the standard barrel of the 500, with the proper choke. They do not recommend shooting slugs through the standard 835 barrel.

The 500 beats the 835 hands down, in all situations except for the duck or goose blind. The 835 is significantly heavier and I've never heard that the overbored barrel was much of an advantage in recoil reduction or patterning.
